Role and Functions of NGOs in India

Non-Governmental Organisations, commonly known as NGOs, are organisations which are engaged to carry through a wide range of activities for the benefit of poor and underprivileged people and the society as a whole. As the name suggests, it is self-explanatory that NGOs work independently, without any financial aid of the government even though they may work in close coordination with the government agencies for implementing their projects. NGOs take up and implement projects to encourage welfare of the community they work with. They work to address various concerns and issues persuading within the society. NGOs are basically not-for-profit bodies which means they do not have any economic interest. Almost all the NGOs are run on donations made by individuals, corporate and institutions. They involve in fundraising activities to raise funds for carrying out the work they do. Ever since independence, NGOs have played an important role in helping the needy in India, contributing aid to the distressed and boosting the socio-economic status of millions in the country.
